Obituary
Luther Erskine Horton was born April 8, 1939 in Columbus, Mississippi, to the late George and Ruth Horton. He was the middle child of 9 children. Erskine departed this life on January 15, 2020, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was 80 years old.
Erskine accepted Christ at an early age. He was united in holy matrimony to Willa Anthony Horton in (year). That union brought about two blessings; Vava and Erskine, Jr. In 1973, Erskine was united in holy matrimony to Doris Raye Merriweather. That union brought about two more blessings; Brian and Tyrone.
Erskine was a quiet family man, and a respected educator and coach. He taught middle and high school in three states: Mississippi, Illinois, and Florida, touching the lives of hundreds of children. In his coaching capacity, Erskine led the Margate Middle School Spartans to win the Florida state championship in the 1981-82 school year, with a record of 15 wins and 2 losses for the season.
He is preceded in death by his parents, George and Ruth Horton; brothers, George Jr “Horton”, Michael, and Kenneth; sisters, Honoree and Charlene.
Erskine is survived by his beloved wife, Doris Merriweather Horton of Indianapolis, Indiana; his children, Vava Horton Riley (Richard), and Erskine Horton, Jr of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Brian Horton (Caren) of Williamstown, New Jersey, Tyrone Horton of Indianapolis, Indiana; 7 grandchildren Camille, Lana, Juwan, Kyle, Bryce, Colin, and Brian Jr; 3 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
