Lillie Murphy Obituary

Lillie Belle Murphy daughter of Sam A. and Luvenia Moore was born December 26, 1930 and was raised in Canton, Mississippi. Lillie was the third of 12 siblings;10 brothers and 1 sister, Sammie, Edward, Sylvester (died in infancy) Lewis Calvin, Robert, Doris, James, Cleotha, Leodis, William David and Kenneth Moore.

The family moved to Indianapolis in May 1945 just prior to World War II. Lillie attended Indianapolis Public Schools #6, #22, and #12, graduating from Crispus Attucks High School in 1949 where her focus was in English, clothing and dressmaking.

She joined South Calvary Baptist Church at a young age. She was active in South Calvary her church, serving in various ministries including Pastoral Search Committee, Women’s Sunday School Teacher, Women’s Day speaker, Homecoming Committee, Culinary Committee, Vacation Bible School and various other committees, serving whenever and wherever she was needed. Lillie was an avid and diligent student of the Bible, and lived a life of service, sharing the gospel at every opportunity, introducing others to Christ.

Lillie married Roy McKinley Murphy in 1950. And this union was blessed with five children; Marilyn Bridgewater (Lowell), Carey Murphy (deceased), Leslie Diane Murphy (deceased) Randall Murphy (deceased) and Brian Murphy

She became a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1964, having graduated from The School of Practical Nursing at the top of her class. She dedicated her career to serving others for thirty-one and a half years at St. Vincent Hospital. She worked in Intensive Care, Coronary Care, and Outpatient Surgery Recovery, retiring from St. Vincent Hospital in 1995.

Her other interests included volunteering at the Children’s Museum, and in 2008 she was honored by United Way as a Minority Volunteer, and was awarded the Outstanding Service Award- Senior. Other interests were sewing, exercising, water aerobics, bowling, traveling with family, and gardening working. In 2003 she was 1st place winner of the Neighborhood Beautification Contest for her flower garden. Lillie loved and was proud of her family and especially looked forward to the Annual Moore Family Reunion. Lillie was loved by many.

Lillie Belle Murphy departed this earthly life on November 15, 2023 at the age of 92 and was preceded in death by her parents, Sam A. and Luevenia Moore; three children, Carey A., Leslie D. and Randall V. Murphy; brothers, Sammie, Edward, Calvin, James, and Sylvester Moore.

 Lillie is survived by her daughter Marilyn J. Bridgewater (Lowell), son, Brian P. Murphy, four brothers, Robert (Barbara, Cleotha (Normajo), Leodis (Marie), David (Kimberley) one sister, Doris Morris; daughter-in-law, LaTonya Murphy, fourteen grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren, her caregiver Asalee Price and a host of extended family members and friends.
